Search has fractured into three parallel channels in 2025-2026, and most sites are only optimised for one of them.
System 1 is traditional Google search: E-E-A-T, Core Web Vitals, structured data. System 2 is AI answer engine optimisation (AEO): getting cited by ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, and Gemini. The citation signals for each AI model differ. ChatGPT rewards Wikipedia backlinks and Bing media mentions. Perplexity rewards Reddit presence. Claude rewards outbound citations and user-generated content at 2-4x the rate of other signals. Gemini follows Google existing authority signals.
